How to Balance Pool Chemistry

Balanced water means pH 7.2-7.8, alkalinity 80-120 ppm, calcium 200-400 ppm, CYA 30-50 ppm.

Test Order

  1. Test alkalinity first (it buffers pH)
  2. Adjust alkalinity to 80-120 ppm with sodium bicarbonate
  3. Test pH; raise with soda ash, lower with muriatic acid
  4. Test calcium hardness
  5. Test CYA (cyanuric acid)
  6. Test free chlorine

Frequency
