How to Remove Pool Algae

Algae (green, yellow/mustard, black) requires shock, brush, and filter cleanup.

By Color

  • Green: most common. Low chlorine + sun.
  • Yellow/Mustard: chlorine-resistant. Needs algaecide.
  • Black: deepest in plaster. Requires acid wash or aggressive brushing.

Treatment

  1. Brush walls vigorously
  2. Triple-shock (3x normal dose)
  3. Add algaecide
  4. Run pump 24 hours
  5. Vacuum to waste (not filter) to remove dead algae
  6. Backwash filter
